I have saw people comment on blogs wrongly. That’s why I wrote this post. In this post, you will learn how to make good comment on blogs. How to avoid being spam… Comments are a part of the blog. So why don’t we make them useful?
In this post, I am talking about comments on blogs, not about comments or youtube or other websites.
1. Be Useful
Being useful is the most precise way to be beneficial to the readers and the blogger. You can be useful in many ways. If you feel the post is missing something, or just want to add some additional information to the post, comment it! Being useful simply means you are providing benefits to your readers!
2. Be relevant to the topic and the post.
Be relevant to the topic and the post, or not your comment will make no sense. I said ‘and’ because the post might not be what you thought it was, so you have to read the post before comment.
There is a comment on ‘How to Repair a TV‘. The comment is written, “Hi, I think you are a great blogger. Maybe you will be a famous blogger one day,” That doesn’t make any sense as the post is not related to that. But, you can turn that comment into an email, and use the contact form on the blog to send it to the blogger.
3. Tell the readers why you like it
Avoid one or two word comments such as ‘Nice post’ or ‘Great article’. They do not make any sense. One day when taking a quick look in the askimet spam section, I saw a two word comment on a post of mine. Even askimet knows about this!
If you want to tell that the article is great, explain why. Here’s an example of a comment on ‘How to Gain Affection From Your Dog’:
Great post.
This post really helped me to understand my dog. It has great details that are easy to understand. It also has great tips. This post is simple but great! I recommend it for all dog lovers!
That’s just a simple comment I made myself. See? It tells why you like the post, not just whether you like it or not.
4. Answer Commentator’s Questions
If a reader has a question on the post, and they commented it, you can answer their questions. And it will make the commentator happy.
Most blogs have an RSS feed for their comments. Some blog comment forms have a tick box asking you whether you want to receive notifications when there is a new comment to the post. The questioner would probably use that RSS feed.
The readers will also benefit from your answer – they read the commentator’s question, and then they look at your answer.
5. Think about others
This also means to push your pride aside.
Avoid promoting your blog unless it is relevant. Avoid making comments like:
Great post! Please don’t forget to check out my blog, {blog address goes here}!
Askimet once marked a comment like this on my blog as spam. Good ole’ askimet.
If you have a post in your blog that is relevant to the post on which you want to comment, it is okay.
Before posting a comment, be sure to ask yourself, “Does this offend the readers?”, “Does this comment make sense?”. Think about what kind of comment you would like to read.
6. Think before you comment
Think before you post a comment. Ask yourself, “Should I post this comment?”, “Is this comment useful?”, “Does this comment affect the readers?”.
After we posted the comment, we cannot edit it again. So, it is best to think before you post a comment. Yes, some websites, such as digg, lets you edit your comment in the 5 minutes after you posted it, but most blogs and websites do not let you edit the comments you posted. So, we better check our comments before we post it.
Conclusion
Good comments are beneficial to the readers and the blogger. If you post a comment, the readers who read through the comments will see it, and if you are one of the readers, and you read a useful comment, it will benefit you.
If you make a suggestion for the post as a comment, the blogger might improve the post. But if you are making a suggestion for the blog, use the contact form instead, or not it wouldn’t be relevant.
And yes, commenting on other blogs is one way of driving traffic to your blog or website, but you have to do it carefully, or not it will hurt your blog’s brand.
Remember – comments are a part of a blog.
I do alot of posting on t-shirt blogs, and blogs in general – especially if those blogs talk about t-shirts. Many times a blogger will blog about the t-shirts they just bought. I will make a comment and invite them to check out my website. Or sometimes an individual will have a design up for voting on Threadless or DBH, and if I like the design, I will compliment it and link back to my site. I have made thousands of such comments, and only ONCE – one time – did a guy write to me and say “Stop spamming my site.” lol he was pissed. Overall, I love visiting the millions of blogs out there and seeing what people have to say, and by making comments, I have been able to generate some sales.
I’m commenting about a post on commenting. How cool is that? π
I view commenting as a continuation of the blog post itself. It can either add or dispute the post, or answer a question. You know how in a forum thread can contain hundred of posts which ends up being a conversation between many people? That what I view the comment sections as, a continuing conversation.
Nice…
Short words comments are sometimes considered as spam, well I’m not too agree with this. You see, if someone thinks “Nice” in the comments box as spam, I guess he / she are too much proud of himself / herself. He / she forgot that the quality of the article defines the comments given, if the article is so touching, I guess people will say more than two words in the comments. If the article is lame, so are the comments. I’d like to suggest people to appreciate comments more, even a punk writing spam comments also takes time.

I don’t really know how u can differentiate b/w good and bad comment….but i see the comment comment is that in which comment is related to the topic which moderator has created and it uses some feed back..
I’m not differentiating good and bad comments. I am giving tips on how to make great comments.
Yes, I agree with you that we shouldn’t make irrelevant comments π

Any one can comment on blog but main thing is that comment is meaningful.I think comment also increase the reader Inters about that blog which is most important.
I think comments are good, they can give both positive and negative feedback, which I like to convert into “constructive criticism”. Even though I have received some harsh comments in my time, I don’t take it personally. I see it as a need for improvement in what ever it was I wrote. So it’s good in a way, as long as you don’t let it get to you personally π
Yeah, I agree. You can learn from constructive criticism but don’t take insults personally π

I personally think that a good, relevant comment is very much needed to keep the conversation going on. Also the admin can improve his/her blogs by getting the visitors opinions. I don’t blame the spammers; because its really hard to be a spammer… LOL.
Don’t believe me, give a try to be an official blog spammer and i can bet you will end up after making 3-5 spam comments!!
Thanks

P.S Gloson I will like to know exactly how was my comment as I want to make it better for the next time, let me know this at my blog on the first post in the comment section after writing your comment on the post. Thank you
I like commenting and interacting with the other commenters because I learn by sharing and learning from them. Genuine ones interested in the post will always make relevant comments. Bloggers also use commenting as an effective way to increase traffic.
